New Smaller Bottle Range

We have added a 200ml size range of bottles, same great flavours, just smaller bottles.

These bottles are great for adding to hampers, taking on picnics and ideal for Secret Santa presents.

Going forward, we may launch new products in this size first, to gauge your reaction to the product. Then we will decide if we should add it to the standard range or delist the product completely

Playing with Elderflower

If you are lucky enough to find us at an event through the summer, pop along and give your comments on our Elderflower comparison test. Help decide which product we launch next, all we ask, is that you blind taste Gin & Elderflower and Vodka & Elderflower, then tells us which you prefer. You can leave your comments, and this will help us finalise our next liqueur.

Great Taste Awards - 2014

Great news, to add to our 2013 Great Taste Award for our Melton Mowbray Sloe Gin, we have now been awarded a two star gold award for our Gin and Raspberry.

Great Taste Awards

We are delighted to announce that at our first attempt we won a Great Taste Gold Award for our Sloe Gin.
The Taste Awards are run by the Guild of Fine Foods, a national event which sees products from all over the UK competing against each other.

A little quote from the Guild's website:

"Great Taste, organised by the Guild of Fine Food, is the acknowledged benchmark for speciality food and drink. It has been described as the ‘Oscars’ of the food world and the ‘epicurean equivalent of the Booker prize’. Quite simply the Great Taste logo is the sign you can trust when buying food and drink in your local, quality retailer."

New products

Over the last few months we have been busy getting our new products ready. We are launching Vodka & Strawberry and Gin & Raspberry. We should have both bottled and available in our online shop by the first week of May, and available in retailers in the weeks that follow. Both products will be 25% ABV and initially available in 35cl bottles.

These summer fruit flavours make great 'summer sizzlers' when soda, cream soda, lemonade or, for something a little special, champagne are added. However  just like our other flavours, great drank neat or over ice - the traditional 'winter warmers'.

For our first batches we have used British grown fruit, and intend to continue to do so. If all goes well, some, if not all of the raspberries will be home grown at Northfield Farm.

Update November 2017: The success of the Gin & Raspberry means we will never be able to grow sufficient raspberries ourselves

Our new project and a hint at a new product

We took over some of the garden at Northfield Farm in 2012, about the time the water authorities were telling us about how short the water supply was going to be in 2012, well we all know how wrong they were. The first day we started tidying up we had a little visit from the farm's llamas. We only grew beans last year... correction only crop that didn't fail. The pigs have now cleared extra ground, and we have started planting raspberry canes. If all goes well, we will get a crop of raspberries to go in one of our new products, more on those products later. We will also be growing some veg for Northfield Farm, providing we are more successful than last year. You can see some pictures here .

Damson Crop Failure

Came across this while browsing the internet, Westmoorland Gazette . We pick our Wild Damson from trees local to us in Leicestershire, but just like the Gazette reports, our harvest will be very poor. Our sloe harvest will also be poor. We have a good amount of bottled stock and some frozen fruit from last year, so next years supply should not be affected.

August 2012

It may have been quiet on the website, but we have been busy in 'the shed' making a few more batches of our liqueurs. The freezers are empty, just in time, as we will start picking wild blackberries shortly.

We have added  a few more events, including our first confirmed 2013 event, the Artisan Cheese Fair in Melton Mowbray - May 4th & 5th May.

2012 Events Updated

Checkout our events pages, we have just added some more events that we will be attending. The first is just two weeks away at the Artisan Cheese Fair in Melton Mowbray, a local event for us. You are correct we don't make cheese, but our liqueurs, especially Sloe Gin are a great accompaniment with cheese.

All Change

Hedgerow Spirits has changed to Sloeberry Spirits Ltd.

Hedgerow Spirits was set up in April 2011 as a "sole trader" business, but early in 2012 we learnt that Hedgerow Spirits had been registered as a "limited" company at Companies House. Although this registration took place in October 2011, after our business was set up, the law regarding the use of the company name favours the limited company over the sole trader business, and so Sloeberry Spirits Ltd. was born.

Sloe Gin Chocolate Truffles

Our Sloe Gin Chocolate Truffles have finally launched. Our award winning chocolatier adds the flesh from our gin infused sloes and a little extra sloe gin to the ganache centre, which is then hand dipped in fine quality Belgian dark chocolate. They will be available from November to December and for the four weeks before Easter.

Sloe Gin Chocolate Truffles

The development and trials for our Sloe Gin Chocolate Truffles have now finished. Shelf life tests are on going, but most likely we will be able to launch these in October. Dark chocolate has been chosen, as it was felt dark chocolate gave the best flavour.

Hedgerow Spirits - the new home of Melton Mowbray Sloe Gin

Melton Mowbray Sloe Gin has a new home and business name – Hedgerow Spirits. We are now based in formerly disused farm buildings at Northfield Farm, Whissendine Lane, Cold Overton, Nr. Oakham. The product will be just the same; exactly the same flavours that customers have enjoyed in the past.

A brief business history

Melton Mowbray Sloe Gin was launched by Rachel Birch in October 2004, motivated by a desire to be her own boss, while at the same time giving people a taste of what the countryside had to offer. The tradition of making Sloe Gin had been passed on through generations of Rachel's family.

From the end of September through to November Rachel rallied her family members to help with the Sloe picking on the family farm and local hedgerows. Today, fruit is still picked from these very same hedgerows from where fruit went into the first bottle of Melton Mowbray Sloe Gin.

Building on the success of Melton Mowbray Sloe Gin, two more products were launched, Vodka & Blackberry and Whisky & Wild Damsons.

At the end of 2010, Rachel made the decision to pursue other interests, and as a consequence sold the business. The business was bought by Andy Hoyle, who following redundancy decided to try the self-employed life. Rachel's products continue to be produced, and building on the solid foundations created by Rachel, new products will be produced.
